In the modern market, computer-based games are the talk of the town. The general line of thought that gaming is just a free exercise and a “waste of time” has become a passé. Nowadays, they not only serve as a departure from the stress-induced lifestyle but also provide a means of livelihood for many dedicated professional e-sports enthusiasts as well. Add to these the advent of online streaming platforms such as Twitch and YouTube, and it is not hard to see why video-gaming is a million-dollar industry.
Gaming has descended beyond the ordinary PC-based gaming. Dedicated gaming platforms, like PlayStation and Xbox, are on a steady rise. While many captivating games are also available on the mobile-device based platforms of iOS and Android, we shall be focussing on the iOS 13 platform-based games in the upcoming sections. Currently, two of the most popular gaming genres are Battle Royale and First Person Shooters. The leading lights of these two gaming genres are PlayerUnknown’sBattlegrounds(PubG) and Call of Duty, respectively. Let’s take an in-depth look into these two games, and try to determine which one is a better fit for the iOS 13 platform.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds(PubG) | For iOS 13
PubG has been a pioneer in the genre of battle royale. Here multiple players equip themselves with the necessary equipment and fight it out among themselves on a massive online server to be the last man or team standing. The players can either play as lone wolves or in a team of two or more players.
The map size also decreases with time, making it more challenging to survive each round. The idea was conceptualized and brought to life by Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene, who produced it as mods for other games. The official game was launched for Windows in April of 2017.
Later versions were also optimized for different platforms such as PlayStation, Android, and iOS. As of now, it is one of the top-grossing videogames across all platforms and has earned multiple ‘Game of the Year’ nominations from critics and consumers alike.
Call of Duty | For iOS 13
The Call of Duty franchise is based on the First-Person Shooter genre of games. Developed by Activision – one of the giants in the gaming industry, it was initially released as a set of story-driven solo missions, focussed on the major world wars and events of the past.
In further iterations, they slowly transitioned into more current issues and futuristic scenarios. The multiplayer scene was also developed, with a variety of game modes like deathmatches, plant the bomb, capture the flag, etc. These became the pillars on which the current Call of duty games hold a steadfast reign. As of now, it has also released a battle royale mode within the multiplayer realm.
It has won numerous accolades and nominations in the past and is a testament to how a game can adapt and stand firm in this volatile market.
Which is better for the iOS platform? – PubG or Call of Duty
Aesthetically speaking, these two games are pioneers in their genres, and cannot be critically compared. They are of two completely different styles, and their target audience is also diverse. Therefore, they are each a classic in their own right.
From a technical standpoint, the Call of Duty for iOS was launched quite recently. Hence it is natural for it is less optimized as compared to PubG, which has been integrated with the mobile platform for quite some time. On the first impression, the gameplay and movement feel smoother on the Call of Duty game than PubG. Jitters and desynchronized flow have been smoothened out, and the whole ordeal of robotic change has been made much more realistic.
However, the interface of Call of Duty on iOS needs some improvement. At present, there are about 20-odd buttons on the heads-up display. It not only increases the complexity but also reduces screen space for maneuverability and obstructs the field of view. Another minor fault is that even though most iOS devices support Bluetooth based game controllers, Call of Duty doesn’t accommodate that feature. So, as on now, it has to be said that PubG is still the better game on iOS. However, Call of Duty is a worthy challenger and can usurp PubG of its throne soon.
